The RITA Legacy Foundation is a nonprofit organization proudly rooted in the South Nashville community of Middle Tennessee. Through resources, mentorship, and advocacy, we empower individuals and families to break barriers, embrace new opportunities, and build lasting legacies of success for generations to come.

Born on January 23, 1951, Rita Sawyers became a symbol of courage and determination when, as a young girl, she stepped forward to help desegregate Nashville’s schools in 1957. At a time when doors were closed to so many, Rita walked through them—opening pathways for generations to come.
Her bravery during one of Nashville’s most pivotal moments in history reminds us that one person’s resolve can create a ripple effect of opportunity and change. Rita’s life and legacy inspire our mission to empower individuals who are “firsts” in their families—first to attend college, first to graduate, first to achieve professional success.
Rita departed this earthly life on September 3, 2022, but her impact lives on through the work of The RITA Legacy Foundation and in the hearts of those she inspired.
